Choosing a wood lamp: light, components, and placement

A sculptural wood lamp has two jobs: contributing a form to the room and providing the light you need. Evaluate the complete lighting assembly alongside the wooden shape, especially when ordering a custom design.

Describe the light's task

Decide whether the lamp will light a book, a work surface, or the room more generally. Take a photo from where you sit and mark the intended location. Check the shade's width, the sightline past it, and the space available on the supporting surface.

OSHA's desk-lighting checklist distinguishes printed tasks from computer work and considers the position and angle of the light. These are useful planning questions; they do not certify any lamp or guarantee a particular lighting result. OSHA: lighting checklist.

Ask about the supplied assembly

Confirm the socket or light source, permitted bulb type and wattage, voltage, plug, switch, shade, and included components. Request the product's electrical instructions and any applicable certification documentation. A wooden body, a component label, or an attractive photograph cannot establish compliance of the complete assembly.

Keep the intended location within the product's stated conditions. Ask the maker about clearance from heat-sensitive materials and how to clean the wooden and electrical parts; do not improvise a heat limit or change components beyond the instructions.

Plan a visible cord route

Locate the outlet and leave access to unplug the lamp. CPSC advises against routing extension cords beneath furniture or carpets and treats them as temporary connections. CPSC: extension cords.
