Natural wood, one piece at a time

Wood grain, knots, edge contours, and color naturally vary from piece to piece. Product images show the expected character rather than an identical grain pattern.

General care

These products are not waterproof. Their durable wood-and-finish construction is designed to handle ordinary accidental spills when liquid is wiped up promptly. Avoid standing water, soaking, submersion, and harsh cleaners.

Dimensions & assembly

Exact dimensions for each size are listed on the option you select above. Most pieces arrive fully assembled; wall-mounted designs include hardware and a template. Measure doorways and stair turns before ordering — most pieces pass a standard 32-inch doorway.

Care: wipe with a soft, dry cloth and oil the grain once or twice a year to keep the surface nourished.

Shipping & returns

Your piece ships free in a protective wooden crate. Freight delivery comes with a scheduled window and tracking; white-glove service — carried inside, placed, packaging removed — is available at checkout.

Returns: 30 days from payment. Pieces need to be unused and in original condition — we arrange the freight pickup and walk you through repacking. Damaged or defective on arrival? We repair, replace or refund at no cost. Made-to-order pieces can be changed or cancelled while the build has not started.

Handcrafted solid wood · Mantel shelf

The shelf the whole room faces

The piece

Dry before it ever meets the fire.

A mantel lives closer to heat than any board in the house, and wood that skipped the kiln will tell on itself there first — checks by February, a cup you can see from the couch. Ours spend twenty days drying at controlled temperatures before the first cut, slow enough that the moisture leaves for good.

So the beam over the living room's firebox holds its line through a whole winter of fires below and forced-air heat everywhere else. Teak moves about half as much as oak to begin with; dried to done, it barely moves at all. Mount it once, level, and stop thinking about it.

  • Full-thickness solid teak carries framed art, clocks, and garland without sagging
  • Deep enough for frames to lean, no wall hooks needed
  • Works over wood, gas, and electric fireboxes at code clearances
  • Kiln-dried twenty days, so heat cycles below don't move it
  • Doubles as a display ledge on any wall, fireplace or not

It fits real homes.

Four stockings, one hook each

The first Saturday of December, the stocking hooks come out of the junk drawer and the argument over whose spot is whose lasts one cocoa. By dark all four hang in a row off the beam, and the season is officially open.

The fire's first night

The first real fire of October, and everyone drifts in without being called. Heat rises past the shelf and the oiled grain goes a shade deeper in the flicker — the whole reason wood belongs above a flame.

December 26th, stood down

December 26th, third party in two weeks done. The garland comes down half-dead, a punch glass left a ring on the shelf overnight, and both wipe away in one pass. The mantel takes January off like everyone else.

Teak, up close.

The grain

Honey and amber bands run the length of each plank. No two boards repeat, so your piece is the only one with this pattern.

The oils

Teak grows its own protective oils, and they carry the wood through dry winters and humid summers that crack lesser boards. Spills just need wiping up promptly.

The weight

Lift a corner and you feel dense, solid stock with no hollow frames or fillers. Kiln-dried before the build, it sits flat and stays put, even when the heat comes on.

The years ahead

Teak deepens toward a richer brown as it lives with you. A wipe of teak oil twice a year holds the tone you chose.

From plank to piece.

Select

Planks graded by practiced eyes, then kiln-dried slowly until they settle.

Mill

Each board cut, squared, and matched to the pattern.

Shape

Joined and eased with hand tools after the machines have done the rough work.

Finish

Sanded fine, then oiled until the grain reads deep.

One maker follows each piece from rough plank to the final coat of oil, and signs off before it is crated.

The Timber Vintique workshop

No two boards alike

The grain that arrives is yours alone.

  1. Every board is cut from a different tree — the photos here are a reference, not a promise.
  2. Your piece is photographed in the workshop before it ships, so you see your exact grain.
  3. Small knots and mineral streaks come with real wood. We leave them in.

Delivery, done properly.

White-glove option

Choose white-glove and the crew brings the piece inside, places it in the room, and removes every bit of packaging.

Crated for freight

Each piece travels in its own wooden crate with corner protection, built to cross the country without a scuff.

Scheduled window

You get a delivery appointment and tracking — not a truck that shows up unannounced.

Honest returns

30 days from payment. If it isn't right — unused, in original condition — we arrange the freight pickup. Made-to-order terms are stated up front.

Questions customers usually ask

Is the mantel a solid beam or a hollow box?
Each mantel shelf in this collection is a full-thickness solid beam — not a hollow box — hand-finished so checks and grain read as character above the firebox.
What lengths can be ordered?
Lengths are cut to order up to about 84 inches. Measure your firebox and add the overhang you want; we also match non-standard depths for stone surrounds.
How does a heavy beam mount?
A concealed steel cleat or threaded rods carry the beam's full weight — hardware included, sized to the shelf. Anchor into studs or masonry, and mind clearance requirements above the firebox.
Does heat from the fireplace affect it?
Heat dries wood, so a mantel appreciates oil twice a year. Keep an eye on clearance codes for your fireplace type, and dust it as you would any shelf.
How does the beam ship?
Mantel beams are made to order and ship in rigid, foam-lined cartons — heavy, so plan for two people to carry. Tracking is provided to you at dispatch.
How does the mantel mount, and how much weight will it take?
Each mantel hangs on heavy lag bolts or concealed steel rods set into studs or masonry, with hardware and a placement guide included. Anchored properly, a full-thickness solid beam carries frames, clocks, and holiday garland with margin to spare — the limit is the wall, never the wood. If anything about your fireplace wall is unusual, send a photo to support@timbervintique.com before you drill.
Is solid wood safe above a working fireplace?
Yes — at the clearances your local code already requires, typically about 12 inches above the firebox opening, more if the shelf projects deeply. Check your fireplace manual. What actually fails above fireplaces is wood that was never dried properly; ours spends twenty days in a temperature-controlled kiln, so the movement is finished before mounting, and the gentle radiant warmth after that is nothing an oiled teak beam notices. Renew the oil every year or two.
