Natural wood, one piece at a time

Wood grain, knots, edge contours, and color naturally vary from piece to piece. Product images show the expected character rather than an identical grain pattern.

General care

These products are not waterproof. Their durable wood-and-finish construction is designed to handle ordinary accidental spills when liquid is wiped up promptly. Avoid standing water, soaking, submersion, and harsh cleaners.

Dimensions & assembly

Exact dimensions for each size are listed on the option you select above. Most pieces arrive fully assembled; wall-mounted designs include hardware and a template. Measure doorways and stair turns before ordering — most pieces pass a standard 32-inch doorway.

Care: wipe with a soft, dry cloth and oil the grain once or twice a year to keep the surface nourished.

Shipping & returns

Your piece ships free in a protective wooden crate. Freight delivery comes with a scheduled window and tracking; white-glove service — carried inside, placed, packaging removed — is available at checkout.

Returns: 30 days from payment. Pieces need to be unused and in original condition — we arrange the freight pickup and walk you through repacking. Damaged or defective on arrival? We repair, replace or refund at no cost. Made-to-order pieces can be changed or cancelled while the build has not started.

Solid teak · Bookshelf

Carved teak that lets light through

The piece

Plate I
Plate II

A bookshelf carved to hold light as well as books.

The designers let the compartments flow instead of stacking a grid, so the piece carries movement even standing still. Every opening is carved from solid teak — no veneer to chip, no particleboard hiding behind a printed skin — and the blank spends twenty days in a controlled kiln first, so the carving keeps its lines at home. Each inner edge is sanded by hand to where fingers actually reach.

Renters repaint nothing and drill nowhere, and the fourth apartment in six years still has landlord-beige walls. A freestanding sculptural shelf is the loophole: it anchors a room the lease says you cannot alter, moves out when you do, and looks better in year ten than any of those walls ever did. The owner holds title to exactly one piece of that apartment — this one.

  • Standard hardcovers stand upright; wider bays take art books and plants
  • Reads as sculpture from the sofa, works as shelving up close
  • Open carving passes window light through instead of blocking it
  • Solid teak throughout — no veneer to chip, no particleboard core

It fits real homes.

Morning shadows

Morning shadows

7 a.m., low sun through the east window angles through the carved openings and lays a slow-moving pattern across the floor — the one part of the school-morning scramble worth stopping thirty seconds for.

One shelf per trip

One shelf per trip

The ceramic bowl from a Lisbon honeymoon, the river stone from an Ozarks cabin week — each trip's souvenir claims a compartment, and the shelf becomes the room's map of everywhere its owners have been together.

The 8:58 call

The 8:58 call

Tuesday, 8:58 a.m., laptop open. Behind the chair the carved teak reads calm on camera — one focal point, no clutter — and a coworker asks about it before the meeting starts.

Made to order

Every piece is made to order, and dimensions vary from one to the next. Need a different size for your space? Tell us your measurements and we'll build it to fit.

Teak, up close.

Grain that reads quiet

Tight, straight grain follows each carved compartment's edge, and where the carving cuts across it the figure shows in soft contour lines, like elevation marks on a map — the detail you notice at arm's length, tracing an opening.

Grain that reads quiet

The finish nature applied

Teak carries its own natural oils; we hand-rub more into the carved faces and inner curves. The surface lands as a warm matte-satin that fingertips read as soft, and the piece arrives smelling like wood, not chemicals — no lacquer film, nothing to off-gas.

The finish nature applied

Density you can feel

At roughly 700 kilograms per cubic meter, with about half the seasonal movement of oak, the carved openings hold their shape through furnace winters and humid Augusts. The AC cycling that bubbles veneer finds nothing to grab here — there is no veneer.

Density you can feel

Golden now, silver whenever

Indoors the carving will not silver — that takes outdoor sun and rain. Expect it to deepen toward honey-amber over the first year; if a sunny wall lightens one side, a light sanding and a rag of fresh oil even it out at home.

Golden now, silver whenever

From plank to piece.

The wood selection

The wood selection

Selectors with thirty years at the lumber stacks pull teak and match it by tone and grain across the flowing form; boards with twist, checks, or dull figure never make the cut.

The shaping process

The shaping process

The organic compartments are traced from templates, then bandsawn slightly proud of the line — spare material left on purpose for the carving gouges that follow.

The hand refinement

The hand refinement

Every carved opening is sanded by hand through five successively finer grits, working the inner curves with folded paper where no machine reaches, until each edge feels right against an open palm.

The final inspection

The final inspection

Oil goes on in thin coats, buffed between each. The maker checks stance and level on a flat bench, runs a hand through every compartment, and signs the shelf out.

One maker follows each piece from rough plank to the final coat of oil, and signs off before it is crated.

The Timber Vintique workshop

No two boards alike

The grain that arrives is yours alone.

  1. Every board is cut from a different tree — the photos here are a reference, not a promise.
  2. Your piece is photographed in the workshop before it ships, so you see your exact grain.
  3. Small knots and mineral streaks come with real wood. We leave them in.

Delivery, done properly.

White-glove option

Choose white-glove and the crew brings the piece inside, places it in the room, and removes every bit of packaging.

Crated for freight

Each piece travels in its own wooden crate with corner protection, built to cross the country without a scuff.

Scheduled window

You get a delivery appointment and tracking — not a truck that shows up unannounced.

Honest returns

30 days from payment. If it isn't right — unused, in original condition — we arrange the freight pickup. Made-to-order terms are stated up front.

Questions customers usually ask

How are the bookshelves constructed?
The bookshelves in this collection are solid hardwood from shelf to frame, with fixed shelves joined directly into the sides — the construction that keeps long spans from sagging under a full row of hardcovers. No MDF or particleboard anywhere in the build, so there is nothing to chip through to.
Can dimensions be adjusted to my wall?
Yes — height, width, and shelf spacing can be adjusted when you order, because each shelf is made to order. Measure your wall and ceiling first; we regularly build around baseboards, sloped ceilings, and awkward alcoves.
Should a bookshelf be anchored to the wall?
Taller bookshelves include an anti-tip strap and wall anchor, and we recommend using it, especially with children in the house. The strap installs into one stud in a few minutes — and for renters, it leaves one small screw hole, not a wall of them.
What care do loaded shelves need?
Dust with a dry cloth, keep the piece a couple of feet from heat vents, and rotate sun-exposed decor so the teak tones evenly. A yearly wipe of oil into the carved faces keeps them rich — ten minutes at home with a rag, never a refinisher.
How does a bookshelf arrive?
Bookshelves are made to order and ship crated, standing on a padded base with the back protected. Photograph the crate before the driver leaves and note anything on the receipt; tracking is provided, and large pieces are delivered by appointment.
What fits inside the carved compartments?
The openings vary across the design — most hold standard hardcovers upright, with wider bays suited to art books, plants, or ceramics. Ask us for the compartment measurements of the current build before you order; because each shelf is made to order, openings can be sized to what you plan to keep in them.
